Sclerotherapy- Treatment for Spider Veins

How does sclerotherapy work?

Sclerotherapy is the preferred treatment for spider veins. During your procedure, Vein Houston will inject a sclerosing solution into the spider veins. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to close. Overtime, your body will absorb the treated vein.

What to expect during Sclerotherapy?

You might experience a slight discomfort from the tiny needle sticks. The injected solution may cause slight itching sensation.  Every session usually lasts 30 minutes. The mild discomfort often is relieved by wearing compression stocking after the procedure.

What is the downtime?

There is a little to no downtime with sclerotherapy. You can return to regular activity the same day. We recommend to avoid sun exposure and strenuous activity for a week.

What are the risks of sclerotherapy?
  • Pigmentation Changes: Occur more often to the patients who are on iron supplements. Often resolves over time.
  • Skin Break Down: Often very small (2-3mm), heals with local skin care.
When can I expect to see the results?

Immediately after sclerotherapy treatment, the treated veins often turn red and get irritated. This is common reaction and often resolves within few days. The treated vein will then slowly fade away over the next 2-4 weeks.

How many sessions will I need?

This usually depends on the extent of the disease.  Typically, Vein Houston recommends several treatment sessions. There is a set limit on the volume of sclerosing solution that can be injected in one session. After 2 to 3 sessions, most patients can expect 60-80% reduction in spider vein visibility and intensity.
